Food Prep Worker

Daily work schedule will vary depending on the needs of the center.

  • Because we are an early childhood education center, you must meet the following basic qualifications:
    1. A food prep worker is responsible for preparing breakfast, snacks, and lunch for the children of the center based on nutritional requirements of the U S Department of Agriculture.
    2. A food prep worker shall have attained one of the following qualification levels:
      1. A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate.
      2. A minimum of an 8th grade education.
    3. A food prep worker shall be supervised at all times by the Administrator of their designate.
  • Food prep work will also perform the following duties:
    1. Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment, utensils, and dishes
    2. Weigh or measure ingredients, such as meats and liquids
    3. Prepare fruit and vegetables for cooking
    4. Cut meats, poultry, and seafood and prepare them for cooking
    5. Mix ingredients for salads
    6. Store food in designated containers and storage areas to prevent spoilage
    7. Take and record the temperature of food and food storage areas
    8. Place food trays over food warmers for immediate service
    9. Inventory food and supplies related to the center's food service.
  • Food preparation workers perform routine, repetitive tasks under the direction of the Administrator or their designate. They cook, they prepare ingredients for dishes by slicing and dicing vegetables and by making salads and cold food items. Other common duties include keeping food and supplies stocked and clean.

    Food preparation workers retrieve pots and pans, clean and store kitchen equipment, and unload and store food supplies. When needed, they retrieve food and equipment for cooks and chefs. In some kitchens, food preparation workers use a variety of commercial kitchen equipment, such as commercial dishwashers, blenders, slicers, or grinders.

  • Must be able to provide the following documents prior to commencing employment:
    1. Health Assessment/TB Test (must have been completed in the last 6 months)
    2. PA Department of Human Services Child Abuse Clearance (must have been completed in the last 6 months)
    3. PA State Police Clearance (must have been completed in the last 6 months)
    4. FBI Fingerprint Clearance (must have been completed in the last 6 months)
    5. Proof of the minimum education requirement has been attained.
    6. Two Letters of Reference (Must contain name of employer, beginning and ending dates of employment, and brief description of job duties performed)
    7. PA Mandated Reporter training online.
